Who is “Prof” Erny?
A Brief History
Prof Erny’s Music Company opened its doors in or around 1940 by professional educator and clarinetist Lawrence E. Erny Jr.. “Professor” Lawrence Erny brought music to school-aged children in “some 17 or so” parishes throughout South Louisiana. Prof was one of the first band directors in the state helping establish music programs in what has become a strong music education state. During his educator years, Professor Erny, was soon nick-named “Prof” by the young musicians and the name has stuck and has continued for over 85 years. Although the original Prof went to the big bandstand in the sky in 1981, his legacy continues throughout the hearts and spirit of today’s musicians of all ages. “Prof” believed that ALL children should be able to enjoy the unique opportunity that band, unlike the other arts, can provide. Music is a lifelong experience filled with friendships, joy and FUN!
A family tradition three generations later.
What started out with Lawrence “Prof” Erny Jr. in 1940, continued on into the 21st century with Prof and Evelyn Erny’s eldest son, Lawrence “Larry” Erny III, and his wife, Glory. Taking over the daily operations from his father in 1978, after a distinguished time as the company store manager, Larry ran the original Oil Center location until his retirement in 2020.
Two of Larry & Glory’s children, David & Mary Erny have taken over the business. David, runs the daily operations of our brick & mortar storefront, as well as purchasing, overseeing of our Reverb & Ebay stores & this new website. Mary runs the special purchases department, is a lifelong guitar pick connoisseur and authority on all things plectrum.
The faces have changed through the years, but the Excellence in Service with the personal touch of a family atmosphere has remained the same; then and now.
We have had the pleasure of the smiles and joy we have been able to share with the musicians, young & old, with some becoming famous, as well as their families, who have come through the doors of Prof Erny’s Music over the past 85 years. We at Prof Erny’s Music strive to continue the tradition, service and dedication to the betterment of the school music programs that “Prof” established many years ago.
Prof’s was here then, now, and will be there tomorrow. Carrying on in the tradition as the headquarters of school bands and a Louisiana tradition and landmark. We look forward to serving the musical community for the next 80 years to come!
